The Allure of the Lab Coat and Logic
Nowadays there are countless forensic drama series. However, there was only one bold enough to delve into the gritty nature of forensic science, and that was CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. After CSI, the audiences were no longer passive and started to process and appreciate the complexity of forensic science. With the hustle and bustle of the daily soaps and every other fast-paced entertainment on TV set in Indian homes, CSI offered something different. CSI was slow and methodical, letting the viewer take the time to solve the intricate and complex logic puzzles. CSI was a counter to other fast paced dramas. The series was set in Las Vegas and was about a team of forensic investigators who had a goal to determine the full scope of each case and how everything that happened occurred. This was a departure from the fast paced and dramatic television prior to CSI. The series was set in a neon lit Las Vegas and showed the quiet tales left behind at a crime scene. The atmosphere of CSI was a mixture of suspense and sadness. The series was so single episode focused that each episode could stand on its own and be enjoyed even if there were episodes that were skipped. CSI started to lose steam with episodes that were drawn out and over complicated. However, the initial episodes of the series were quick and attention grabbing to get an audience and maintain viewer intrigue with excellent performances by the actors.
Who's Gathering Evidence, and Who's Heading to Bed?
Your family will love to watch CSI together. However, there are a few things you should know before letting the younger grandchildren sit in. CSI has a TV-14 rating. This means that there are no overly graphic scenes, but the subject matter is still disturbing to young children because it is about murders and serious crimes. The grandparents that enjoy solving mysteries will appreciate how evidence is solved through science. Teens that appreciate a well thought out mystery will also enjoy the show. The show was one of the first to use modern technology, which draws the interest of some audience members. There are some things that may not appreciate the show because of a focus on violence. This may be from the focus on “real” human Nature and the start of the episode. The show is ok for a family that can appreciate drama that has lots of detail and not a really good plot, in contrast to most family shows.
Dissecting the Drama: Pacing, Performances, and Puzzles
One of CSI's greatest strengths is its ability to balance procedural detail and storytelling. Each of the 43-minute episodes has a complete and closed story that can be enjoyed quickly or in one sitting by binge watching. The pacing is deliberate, which allows the audience to follow the investigators as they start by gathering a tiny fiber and end by figuring out a complex and robust motive. One of the things CSI does well is teaching the audience that the smallest details are often the biggest and most important clues. The original cast, and in particular, the likes of William Petersen and Marg Helgenberger, New addition cast members, made character portrayals that were previously inferior memorable and important. The acting and performances of the cast add and provide the emotion to the case, and the science, enough to satisfy the audience, but still focuses on the case of the week. CSI often sacrifices character development. While the team and the characters are enjoyable and close, and after finally being able to binge the series, audiences are disappointed and feel left behind. CSI has a great ability to exude tech explanations and details in a procedural manner easily, however, the science, and specifically the forensic details, are overwhelming at times and at the worst, boring and dull. The show, because of its long run, became predictable, even to those who binged the series like myself.
The Legacy of a Forensic Frontier
When it came to television crime dramas, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation truly revolutionized the genre. The way it integrated the scientific method with an intricate mystery started a precedent that a lot of television crime dramas emulate. The show had incredible lasting success. It was able to not only create 15 years worth of original material for itself, but create spin-offs, books, and video games. It was loved by audiences spanning the globe. Most notably, it even won an award for the most popular dramatic series. That speaks to the fact that it doesn't follow the suspense television cliches. Rather, it relies on its well-presented forensic science plots to keep the viewers captivated. From beginning to end it boasts an easy to enjoy and watch plot that answers science's biggest "whys" and "hows." Every episode is its own science puzzle. Even while of its critics point out its close integration with plots of state-sponsored crime and surveillance, this does not mean it lacks entertainment as a police procedural drama.
