The Unwavering Pulse of New York Justice
For almost 50 years, 'Law & Order' has used its methodical formula to dissect the inner workings of the American legal system. Unlike most shows, this one doesn't glorify the fast-paced, high intensity nature of the job. Instead, it focuses on the monotonous nature of the job. Every episode follows the same structure - from the evidence collection by the police, to the district attorney's office building the case to prove the suspect’s guilt. An intrinsic part of the show’s philosophy of storytelling is the methodical, almost academic, structure. In fact, it invites the audience to think beyond the crime and delve into the ethical and social complexities of each case. In comparison to most dramatic shows that focus on the human psyche and ethics, this structure is a much appreciated departure, providing deeper philosophical thinking as opposed to the short lived adrenaline rush.
Who Shares the Sofa, and Who Might Prefer a Nap?
This is where 'Law & Order' is most unique for family viewing. Even with a TV-14 rating, the show covers murder, assault, corruption, and some of the baser elements of the criminal and human mind. The show isn't graphic, but the implications can be heavy and emotional. Young teenagers who are cricket fans and have grown accustomed to short, fast-paced formats will probably find the courtroom scenes fairly boring because they are slow and dialogue heavy. But, for teens who enjoy solving puzzles, or who like discussions about current events, there is an intellectual challenge in the show that can be addictive. Law & Order is in the wheelhouse of grandparents. They will enjoy the conversations about ethics and morals within the show, and courtroom dramas along social issues that are drawn from real-life events. Younger children will probably be the least interested in the show of all family members. It is thoughtful, rather than entertaining, television that is better suited for more mature family members and older teenagers.
The Unsung Heroes: Moments and Performances that Persist
Although it focuses on the cases rather than the characters, ‘Law & Order’ is great at creating compelling standalone drama in each episode. Some of the show's best moments are depicted in interrogations, where the audience is able to watch detectives uncover truths, layer by layer, behind lies. Some of the show's best moments are depicted in the courthouse, where the entertainment is provided by legal experts battling one final time. The show also consistently displays its strength in its talented cast. With the consistent great performances from the cast, the show is entertaining, but serious enough to keep it classy. Great actors portray weary and passionate characters with a drive for justice to elevate the drama. There are also great performances from the guest stars that play the victims, suspects and witnesses. The show also provides both sides to an argument to show that justice is not black and white. It also doesn't shy away from moral gray areas to elevate the show beyond a mindless cop show into modern morality plays. Hopefully these episodes will start many deep conversations in households long after the show has ended.
Where the Gavel Might Fall Flat for Some
Law & Order has some strong points; however, there are pitfalls it encounters when trying to please a family audience. One of the series’ greatest strengths is also its greatest pitfall. A large part of its appeal comes from the series’ consistency. This comes at the cost of arcs and continuity. While the characters evolve, and faces come and go, progress is often slow if any. This can leave audiences feeling as though there is little actual development, mainly when they have expectations of deeper storylines. The series is also heavily episodic, and while there is a great deal of variation in the cases presented, the overall structure can become predictable. Law & Order strives to keep things as real as possible, and for some this is a strong selling point, however, it means that a good deal of the time there are no real wins, and cases end without closure. In a series where justice is not always served and the restoration of the legal balance is lacking, a sense of dread and heaviness can be the predominant feeling for some. It also means that escapism is a difficult achievement, even for a casual watch.
The Final Call for Your Living Room Screen
‘Law & Order’ is a staple of television because it’s smart, thoughtful, and excellent in the genre that it occupies. As for an Indian household with older children and adults, it’s an excellent pick. Older family members like to ‘deconstruct’ and analyze complex stories. Families like to discuss moral and justice related dilemmas as they relate to real world issues. The legal system is dealing with issues that are ‘ripped from the headlines’ and relate to the everyday problems of humanity. While it’s not a good introduction to family entertainment, for families that enjoy a show that helps them converse, ‘Law & Order’ deserves a spot. The focus is not so much on the ‘thrill of the chase’ as it is on the ‘never ending quest for the truth,’ making it a little more cerebral and a bit dreary, perhaps, but a good choice for your Cocoflix list.
