Unlike Reynolds and Reynolds’ quick and joking ways, Branagh’s character is a huffing and puffing mix of Jack Sparrow and a courier. Branagh is the unpredictable smartass of the movie that realistically should have some hint of menace, Reynolds’ charm does compensate for that lack of menace, and the characters don’t work as well without it. There are some great moments—I don’t think I’ve laughed this much at a movie in some time—because Reynolds and Branagh are so great together.

Their energy is the film’s carrying energy, but the jokes, too, do not rely on the clandestine conversation. It is a complete package with this one. Reynolds, too, has quickly become a quick laugh favorite, and it would be nice to see not just him, but Branagh again, too. It’s a promising beginning for TrustNordisk to get one that doesn’t quite work out flying. Hopefully they get another shot off the ground. And, some of the best fuel isn’t even in the tank(s).

The film combines brilliantly executed action, and joyful adventuring packaged in a delightfully entertaining manner. It is one of those movies that can accommodate a variety of audiences due to its simplicity.

There are a couple cons to the film. “Mayday” isn’t for people looking for something that’ll blow their minds. There are a lot of plotlines that are just waiting to be developed and a very one dimensional support cast that will have you guessing what’s going to happen next… oh wait.
