The Lure of Sun-Kissed Mystery and Friendship

Outer Banks transports us to an idyllic and sunny island off the coast of North Carolina. The town is divided between the Kooks and the Pogues. Hoping to build an even more exhilarating adventure, the show follows the outstanding John B, his best friends Pope, Kiara, and JJ, and their quest to discover a hidden treasure after tracing the first evidence of it. This will also test their friendship and adventure will get even more exciting and more dangerous. The series amazingly combines coming-of-age stories and mystery which keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. If you like treasure hunts, love stories, and a deep friendship, then you will enjoy this show. The cast also include Indian families. This show is an amazing getaway for Indian families, especially the younger ones, from the everyday stress of life. The island itself makes you feel like the characters in the show and you can enjoy the sun, the sand, and all the secrets. You feel drawn into the charm, and you forget all your troubles like all the characters.

Who's Gathering Around the Screen (and Who Might Head to the Kitchen)?

Teenagers and young adults will especially love Outer Banks. The friendships, romance, rebellion, and thrilling chase will resonate with this group. Teenager cricket fans will enjoy the suspense as much as a close match. Then there are teenage drama fans who will love the show for the overall mystery and the intricate relationships. The show will get everyone talking, and it has the hallmark bingeability part. The parents will be able to enjoy the show for it's themes of loyalty and perseverance. The TV-MA rating means that teenagers and up should be the age for viewing. Elements of the show will be engaging for younger audience members, and elements will be dull for Grandparents. The rapid focus on teenagers will be off-putting. Teenagers will love the show. The melo-drama will appeal to this age. The show was made for families with teenagers, but teens only.

High Tides and Standout Performances

The best part of Outer Banks is how the plot moves at the speed of light. It keeps the audience interested by doling out just enough clues to, yet, keep them completely in the dark. The treasure hunt is a perfect example of plot sequencing, and many critics agree the plot itself has its fair share of points that feel like they are breaking under the weight of the plot, but the show balances it out with its melodrama and a knack for keeping things interesting. The camaraderie, coupled with outstanding chemistry, of the young ensemble cast that includes madelyn cline, Madison Bailey, and Chase Stokes, also makes the show stand out. They're fierce defenders of each other, and the emotion they portray captures the real struggle of the daily lives of their characters. The plot jumps from boat chases to hand to hand combat. The *Outer Banks* team manages to develop a voracious passion for exciting, high action sequences that take the show from a bland teen show and turn it into a teen show with an adventure comparable to The Goonies. The scenery of the beach is used as plot material to add to the relaxing fantasy of the show. The dynamic of the cast coupled with the love for staying active and taking risks cements the show as a favorite in many hearts.

Rough Waters and Plot Twists That Strain Credibility

Even with the excitement that comes with watching Outer Banks, the series has its fair share of choppy waters. With its dramatic elements reaching levels of fantasy and making certain plot threads convoluted and almost too convenient, the show has its fair share of detractors. Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter sums the series best as: 'pretty people, pretty cinematography, pretty dumb.' When comparing the story to real-life logic and reasoning, many moments of the story take a backseat to over-the-top action. The later seasons tend to get more negative reviews than the previous seasons, and the third season has a 56% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Many aspects of the show start to feel monotonous, and things that could be explained by the plot easily become too convenient. Even though the journey is filled with lots of close calls, and the many obstacles the characters face seem to be too much, people still find themselves rolling their eyes and getting sick of the show. The "haves vs. have-nots" element is there and starts to rear its head every now and again, but the focus quickly gets put back on the adventure and action. For some, the dramatic action sequences and the many unexplained plot elements get tiresome, and begin to feel like a drag on the story, especially because of how much everything else in the show happens at once.

Our Final Take: Is Outer Banks Cocoflix-Worthy?

For families who want a trip all together where the older kids can be divided into two more age-appropriate groups, consider Outer Banks. The show must balance so many different genres, like a coming-of-age show, a mystery with a thriller like edge, and tons of action. Although it may be a little cheesy, and even has some contrived storylines, it is hard to go wrong with a show like this. It's particularly great to watch this show as a family over the course of a weekend because of all the talking points that it creates. It's a great show to think about these issues of growing up with together like how do you define loyalty, how do you define bravery and the new territory nervousness. Just be aware of the rating system, and think about if the themes present will fit your families needs. If you are after a family show that gets everyone excited to watch not the usual boring fare, Outer Banks deserves its spot on your screen.

— Steve Greene, IndieWire

“Outer Banks over-the-top melodrama is balanced out by a strong sense of adventure that's bound to hook those looking to capture that summer feeling.”
